Top Places to Visit in Myanmar

Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, is a sovereign state in Southeast Asia (my favorite part of the globe!).

As I already mentioned in my description, I am strongly attracted to lesser-known destinations and Myanmar is one them because it still feels authentic and unspoiled by large-scale tourism. In fact, there are not as many tourists as in other Southeast Asian countries because Burma is just now finally embracing tourism after 50 years of isolation.

Myanmar is full of beautiful places, incredible nature and breathtaking architecture. Despite being a small country there are many places that I strongly recommend to visit, so if you want know the Top Places to Visit in Myanmar take a look below!

The Golden Rock

The Golden Rock, also known as Kyaiktiyo Pagoda, is an important Buddhist pilgrimage site in Mon State. It is a small pagoda built on top of a granite boulder covered with gold leaves pasted on by male devotees. In fact, women are not allowed into the inner sanctuary nor they are allowed to touch the rock; women are only permitted in the lower courtyard and in the outer balcony of the rock.

The Golden Rock is the third most important Buddhist pilgrimage site in Myanmar after the Shwedagon Pagoda and the Mahamuni Pagoda.

Lake Inle

Lake Inle, one of the biggest attractions in Myanmar, is where you can admire fishermen fishing while standing on one leg.

The lake is beautiful, but unfortunately is becoming full of noisy longboats and there have been alarming reports about the environmental impact of tourism on the lake ecosystem.

Mandalay and its surrounding areas offer a wide variety of attractions; some of them can be reached by bicycle, others by motorized transport, others by boat. The best way to visit all the most important sites is to spend two days in the area, one dedicated to Mandalay’s surrounding areas and one to Mandalay itself.

Bagan, also called Pagan, is the land of pagodas because of its abundance of pagodas. So, to be clear, if you are traveling to Bagan, you will see pagodas.

This is the most visited city in Myanmar and also the most photographed one, especially the Valley of the Temples where thousands of temples, pagodas and monasteries are spread across forty square miles.

Are pagodas the only attractions of Bagan? Of course not, from Bagan you can take a day trip to Mount Popa and the Popa Taugkalat Monastery.

Be careful at the Taugkalat Monastery. This place is known for the consistent presence of monkeys. I love monkey, they are cute…but not friendly! Here are a few things you shouldn’t do to avoid monkey attacks:
  • smile, it sounds crazy but smiling at monkeys can be dangerous as they see it as an attack;
  • bring food. If they smell food, they will attack you;
  • get too close to them.
At the Popa Taugkalat Monastery you’ll have to take off your shoes. This was not a pleasant experience as monkey excrements were EVERYWHERE! So please, don’t forget to bring wet towels to clean your feet at the end of your visit
